What is the soil food web?

The soil food web is the interaction of soil microorganisms with the environment, plants, and animals.

The major groups that make up the soil food web are bacteria, fungi, protozoan and nematodes. When in balance, this groups interact with each other and create an abundant environment for the plant to grow.

Why is the soil food web important?

Nutrients Cycling

Nutrients are present in the soil organic matter and parent materials but to be accessed by plants they need to be released from the crystalline structure they are trapped in by bacteria and fungi.

Bacteria and fungi then absorb the nutrients which are later made available to the plant roots when their predators, protozoan and nematodes, consume their prey and excrete their waste (nutrients in plant available form).

With a complete soil food web there's no need to use inorganic fertilizers.
